In video as well as video surveillance, "megapixel" describes how many pixels can be taken per an area. The higher the count, the more pixels and more data that can be captured. This data is important for getting readable text off of surfaces or for capturing enough facial points for face recognition. The images captured, though the same dimensions, are much higher detail and can present a storage problem if not handled carefully since each image is bigger in terms of file size.
